I wish mine had that info in it. I happend to stumble across this info while doing hours and hours of research before installing my belt drive.

Just a reminder, all HD seals can be found at the autoparts store if you have the part number.... the crank seal is actually a GM wheel bearing seal.

This is some great info, which part number is it the parts guy would go by?

with out the special tool it is easyer to install the seal and its not likely to bend if you install it tin out - nope never seen any difference in what way it goes - we bent the rules and install incorrect just to see what happens -- nothing

BDL states it must be installed with spring facing in. And from the looks of the pic your seal is in to far/deep. You can see a lip befor the seal? There should be no lip before the seal?? But When installed the seal should sit flush. With the crank case (the hole you are pressing it into. If it is to far in it will leak!!!.. This was my problem. Harley makes a special tool for this. The tool only allows the seal to be pressed in so far. Which is why the manual don't tell you how far in the seal needs to be. Harley assumes you have the tool. The only reason I know this is because I have a good relationship with the Harley dealer I go to and they told me how to seat the seal properly without the tool.
