FXR's tend to go for a premium price (at least they do in my area). So be ready for sticker shock. If you don't have a specific bike in mind, it's tough to give you much help other than generic advice.
Look for basically the same stuff you'd be looking at if it was a car. Mileage and if it looks like the previous owner(s), have taken care of it are major considerations. Cam bearing and lifters might be due for changing if it's got a lot of miles on it.
If you've never owned a Harley before (it sounds like you haven't), you will think a lot of things are wrong, that are 'normal' HD sounds.
Good luck! And welcome to the EVO forum.

Thanks for the welcome! I'm usually in the touring forum due to my road king. I've been missing my evo motor and carb, so I'm thinking of taking a step back in time if you will. I'm a good mechanic, I just know a lot of you guys are too and was looking for any sage advice! I'm going to check the compression and look it over real good, but I'm kinda looking at it as a project. At the very least I'm going to have to repaint it.

Corrosion on the swingarm frame mounts.
FXR isn't a step back from an FLHR, the FLHR is more of sidestep from a FXR. Step to the side and down a little, I'd say.
Unless you are looking for an on road couch for two.
I like the green FXR3s, but you'll pick up 80s' FXRs for really low prices. Like 4 or 4 and half.
Just make sure it already has a EV27 etc in it.
Keep an eye on Craigslists for an idea of prices and bargains.

I can't say I like the frame color though.
EV-27 is the cam that Harley should have used stock instead of the crappy EPA compliant one they did.
