No choke has been working for me once I've been running and up to temp.

But it does seem to need the leaner to hit on cold starts, on even warm days.

To me it reminds me of the bubble push bulb on small engine carbs.
Everything I've bought new that had it I never used it. But if it was something
I picked up used and the person said hit the bulb a few times that's what it takes.

I have an S&S Super E carb. Stock EVO motor with Crane fireball cam and Blue Streak points/condenser. My procedure differs a bit from cold to hot. Cold start I open the enricher fully and kick the motor through 2 complete cycles. I close the enricher and bring the motor up on compression stroke. I turn the ignition to ON and just barely crack the throttle open. I kick it through and she fires up. The hot procedure is just to bring it up on compression, turn the ignition to ON, kick it through and it fires up.

When I had my S&S E with the Ultima ignition, I would have to use the enrichner to start even when hot, but would shut it right off (the enrichner) and it would idle fine. When hot,, if I did not use the enrichner, I would have to twist the throttle a few times while turning it over to get it to fire and it would take a while to idle smoothly.

Anyone have or had that? Does it even matter? Tell yeah the truth I kinda
wish I had a new Harley engine. Kinda scared of the long term issues/life, etc.
I have the same as you, a 111 in a '90 ultra. Keep the oil changed, ride it with respect, and stop worrying, it's a nice engine. Oh yeah, enrichener on when cold, just hit the button when warm.

I think I am narrowing this thing down. When warm just hit the button. If it doesn't start the first time it will the second. Not too much twisting or it will backfire like a 12 gauge shotgun and the ladies at the gas pumps will pee on themselves.

On a cold engine (first start of the day), no need to twist the throttle 3 or 4 times. I just use a slight twist as I hit the starter, using full choke, and the engine always starts immediately. I'll ease the choke off slowly as the engine warms to keep the idle rpm at about 1000. With this Evo engine, I always let it warm up slowly before I start my ride. By the time I'm ready to ride off, the choke is completely off.

On a warm engine, no choke is necessary. Just hit the starter, and she fires right up.

Side note: I have 10:1 compression, and use my manual compression releases for every start.

When warm it seems to not get enough gas or, too much if I start twisting on it. If I just hit the starter after it has sit for say, 30 minutes, it will not start. My next try will be a 1/2 twist and then hit starter with throttle closed. Trying to avoid those amazingly loud backfires.

Are you absolutely sure your timing is right?
