Default Oil Filter Mount Loose

Got a 1989 FLHS Sport......noticed the oil filter was wobbling....pulled the oil filter and the oil filter mount is loose. Looked up the threaded male filter mount and see no way to remove or tighten the mount. No threads, or allen wrench removal, smooth all the way up.......do I remove the oil lines and tighten? Would that not screw up the oil line connection? Thanks

You get to the head of the bolt from under the starter. Takes "just the right wrench" to do without removing the starter, so they say, and the bolt is left hand thread. It is a not-uncommon problem. Some locktite is a good idea.

You the man Dr. Hess....bolt head below the starter and the top of the transmission..got to it from the left side over the top of the swing arm...tight fit but used a 9/16 ratchet wrench to snug it down....didn't locktite afraid I'd never get it back together..easy to tighten when you know how...also it's a right hand thread to tighten...Thanks again!!!

Cool. Some have been reported to be right hand thread, and some left hand thread.

So how would one know which thread style we have? Would the parts manual show the thread style? I have the same wobbling filter mount issue. I did get on it one time to try and tighten, with no luck (did not remove starter yet). I could not get any movement if it's a normal right hand thread style, it's either bottomed or seized. I assume if it was a left hand thread I would have been able to loosen it in that right turn (clyde) direction?

I seem to remember looking at the parts diagram online and, is there supposed to be a rubber o'ring under the head of the bolt? Mine is missing if that's the case. Wondering if it deteriorated and fell off, now creating the wobble? Maybe I am way off base here on that. Thoughts?

No idea on which are which. It's just an observation of people here that have had the problem. Dunno about the O ring either. Loctite seems to be part of the solution.
