Default I should be taking pictures : Winter odds and ends

Big Red (that's my '90 EG for those of you who were too cheap to buy a program and keep score at home) decided it was time for a winter brake the other day. Coming home, the rear brake went south. Push the pedal all the way down, you get next to nothing.

Erp.

She's on the jackstand now.

Damn. Strip it all away, and she looks pretty much like the FXR sitting next to her.

Beside the aforementioned rear brake work (Not sure yet where all the fluid went. Reservoir is all but empty. Either the master cylinder or the caliper is stuffed or I've got a bad line/connection somewhere), she's getting tires, shocks, fresh paint on the batwing (damned parking lot drop!), front brake service, fork service, LED headlights.

The "maybe" list includes a new seat (heated Corbin or at least a re-foaming of my stocker), Progressive fork springs, new radio and speakers.

Heading over to the painter's now to drop off the batwing. Tonight I'll get the wheels pulled, and then dig into pulling the inner fairing so I can get to the forks.

I got to my forks by pulling the radio and leaving the inner in place

That is seriously good to know. I was wondering how deep I'm going to need to dig into that rat's nest.

just removed the radio , then I was able to get to the top fork nuts and pinch bolts , needed a little help with a little hammer and a driving bar from the top of the forks to get them to break free (rust in pinch bolt area) but after that is was a piece of cake.

More progress. Got all the bracketry pulled from the back, got the mufflers off, got the wheels off.

The mufflers gave me an idea. I think I'd like to put some fishtails on this thing. Just because I love the old hot rod look.

Clarion nz503 would be a nice addition to Big Red. The nav is pretty useful and the sound is nice too.

Wowzer! That thing looks like it should be on the bridge of the Enterprise! Very cool.

How do you use your radio? I've never had one on a bike. Big Red's stock unit was dead when I bought it.

My plan at the moment is to find some relatively cheap head unit, use that adapter you wrote about a while back to try to get it wired in with the handlebar controls, upgrade the fairing speakers, and see what I think. I'm skeptical if I'll even be able to hear the thing, but only one way to find out.

I do like the idea of having that flip-up nav system. That is cool stuff, right there.

Anyway, if riding with a radio works out, then maybe next year I'll go all out and get a nicer head unit, rear speakers, etc.

Oh, and bad news: Talked to the folks at Corbin today, and they don't think heat is an option on that year/model. Bummer. I'll know for sure next week.
