I went through that with my bike and it was a fuel leak. The hoses were cracked and seeping. It was hard to see the leak. Replaced all of the hoses and the smell went away.

There is a cross over but no seepage at all. The bike is a carb. I do have the vacum operated petcock on the tank. If I smell gas wouldn't there be a leak?

Feel under the carb where the float bowl is. Feel if it's wet. Float may be sticking. I always turn off the petcock for this reason. And yes, there should be gas but it doesn't take much to stink up the whole garage.
