Or you could do something like this.
Seems like a whole lot of effort needlessly, especially considering many guys already have a trickle charger pigtail on their battery. Since the connector is there for trickle charger anyway, then why not get additional functionality out of it?
Here is but one example but there are many on the market.

Another thing is to think differently about the solution to a problem.
Some of you recall I broke down on the way home from the last Evo meetup. On top of the breakdown, my cell phone was nearly dead and barely had enough power left to call for help.
Besides fixing my bike, after that incident, I decided I also needed to address the nearly dead phone problem.
I was going to add a USB port or some kind of charging set up. Then I got to thinking that my bike is not the oldest thing I ride / drive. My car is a 1981 model, so it might leave me somewhere one day. Also, even though my Jeep is new, where I go with it, I don't need roads. Maybe one day I will get stuck in it somewhere or I will roll it over.
Ultimately, I bought a case for my phone that increases the battery capacity by 150%
It was expensive but works so well that I can go a long time before needing to charge my phone even with heavy usage.
The company is called Mophie.

Just throwing that out there as an alternative way of tackling a problem.

I picked up a power port that takes a USB type cable so I can plug in or charge a phone or whatever. It's a device that fits in a dash. So I plan to make a hole in the inner fairing of my '91 FLHTC. Should be a nice addition. The ground is easy enough, but I am wondering where a good spot would be to tie in the hot side. I don't want it to be hot all the time, just when the bike is running. Any suggestions?

USB port
Thanks to everyone for the comments. After looking at the wiring diagram I noticed that there should be a pigtail for the lighter off the power plug for the radio. I will tie in there, put the port in the inner fairing, and I will be good to go. As for those who suggested that I should just use the lighter, this is a classic not an ultra, so it doesn't have a lighter. The diagram suggests that the plug should be available, so as soon as the temp gets above zero I am going to check it out. Spring is coming, so riding season is around the corner, yeehah!
