Nice looking bike...good score!

A CV, S&S or Mikuni carb would be much more user friendly in getting it to run right.

Outlaw...I could weld it, but would have to do it with fitting out, and it would probably not go back in after the weld...at that point might be able to tap the hole and thread something in
Tommy C...Yeah, that's a good idea. I think there is even a swap meet coming up here

Yeah, that SU and forward controls definitely need to go. The SU is cool though.

I am not even sure where to start with the forward controls. I looked at a parts fiche for the bike and there are so many different parts involved to put it back to mids.

The SU is cool...need to find out more about that also, so I can determine if it is set up correctly...

Personally I'd leave the forward controls.
Mids are for purists and IMO give you an uncomfortable riding position.

As for your SU being set up correctly look at your plugs.
They will tell you if your carb is set up correctly or not.

Gorgeous bike....great score...especially that rarer model.

Lots of options for the carb.....reset it to stock settings...adjust from there.
Or...replace it. S&S are common, and easy to work on. Had one of those on my Shovel...easy, thirsty, but easy.
Current ride has a Mikuni 42....I love that carb...did a little dialing in when I got it, runs great, responsive, will idle low 'n slow all day.

Forwards versus mid controls...that a personal comfort choice. Prefer extended forwards myself....past 2 bikes had them, wifes bike has them. Several rides ago I had an FX with the stock mid controls, and I put the highway pegs on the front tubes of the frame. I used to have my feet on them, and shift and brake with my heels. I love that setup. If I felt like really ripping through the twisties I could just move my feet back to the mid controls. And then stretch them out on the highway pegs for normal cruising.

Cool ride....

I had a '92 FXR, that I bought new. I couldn't get rid of the mid controls fast enough. It was such an awkward position.

I ran an Edelbrock on my '80 Shovel. I think I picked up a Mikuni 42 for my old FXR. I probably could have been fine with the CV, but I got all wrapped up in bigger, bigger, bigger... I was young, what did I know, right?

--texashillcountry...I will at least try the forwards, never had them before. As far as the carb, I did check the plugs, they were darkish, but not oily, maybe rich. I ordered a FSM and as soon as it gets here, will also check compression.
--yeoldestonecat...Thanks. Ive not looked into carbs yet...might try to see if I can tune the SU... plugs are a little dark...see where that takes me.
--axis39...Thanks. Well, I dont have the excessively young thing going on, so I just want it to run as it was meant to, within reason
--Tony N... Thanks...I will definitely enjoy it!
