89 EVO II Oil Type Question
#11
I put Mobile Synth in my 86 to see what would happen....Never again! The stories about it being louder and leaking a little more are all true. Its so damn thin and then goes around cleaning the years of built up dino grunge in the engine that everything gets 'loose'.
I am back to standard Harley oil.

Interesting stuff! Not doubting anyones opinion, but we run Amsoil in both of our evo's
(Well one is an S&S). The old Harley does have a few damp spots if it's not cleaned once
in a while, but the S&S has not had a single hint of an oil leak since I rebuilt it 3 yrs ago.
just sayin......
We run a 50/50 mix of 20-50 and straight 60 in the summer months. Nice and quiet.

Yep, a rebuilt motor with better gaskets it will not leak. My 99 got a dose of Mobil 1 Vtwin and started leaking within about 200 miles. I drained it and put Castrol GTX 20-50 dino back in it and it has not leaked since. That was about 30,000 miles ago.
I do let it warm up till the rocker boxes are starting to get warm before I ride off. 50,000 miles with no leaks. I hate to even mention it as it will probably start leaking tomorrow. LOL

hey everyone, i searched for this topic thinking that someone must have had the same question before but i turned up with nothing. I have an '89 electra glide ultra classic with 68k on the original motor. I have always gone to harley for the past three years since i've had the bike for the primary case oil. (20w-50) a buddy of mine recently became an amsoil dealer, and i went through him this time to order the primary oil after putting all the bikes info into the online catalog database. Come to find out amsoil recommends using synthetic 20w-50 oil in the bike. My question for the community is, whether i should switch to synthetic or stay with the conventional oil? I've heard from some old timer friends that that old evo's did not like the synthetic oils, and run better with the conventional (since the tolerances are not tight enough for synthetic oil use.)
any help would be greatly appreciated!
