There's this one that works with older shovel style with the primary mounted solenoid but it needs a big heavy starter relay that doesn't come with the kit.

Here's the relay it needs,

If you have the later Evo style starter this is the one,

Thanks very kindly. I looked. They speak of "diode-suppressed" relay...

Diodes are sometimes used to clip voltage spikes - and relay, being inductive, makie spikies. The relay being suppressed may be because spikes have been known to ruin other electronic components... I find this very interesting, and new to me so far as bikes go.

The precise fitment seems a bit vague - I think I'll order these two bits from my local indy - so he can deal with fitment problems, if they occur. My FX has the old style solenoid on primary at 90 degrees to starter shaft. Has OES switch CV carb and manifold off a 91 evo, maybe stock electronic ign. OES disconnected. timing way retarded under the cone.

Rode her home. Bike's a bit of a project.

Thanks again!

Well, it wasn't just the solenoid. Think I'm gonna run the larger guage wire fix from the relay to the solenoid.

I had trouble with my solenoid late last summer. A new plunger and cleaned contacts fixed it, until it stranded me at Big R last Saturday. Jumpers didn't help, and letting cool for an hour didn't help. I was about to call a tow truck when I realized I could start it by removing the solenoid end cap and pushing in on the plunger. Bike started and the plunger came flying out. I threw the plunger in a saddlebag and took off for home.

I ordered this from J&P on Monday, got it Thursday, and installed it this morning. I'll go through the wiring next time I have the tank off (already serviced the grounds), but for now I have a backup starter switch.

This button is for the modern starter configuration, very different from the `88 and earlier starter setup that is in question.

Anyone ever find a good solution to have a button on the end of the solenoid for 88 and earlier starter setups?

Yup. That works just fine. Second big challenge is keeping that solenoid from leaking oil behind the gasket\bootie.

That's not a challenge the, mine hasn't leaked in years, new foam ring, boot and spread the boot lip as you tighten it down, most people just squish it down, then it leaks.
