Now am I right that the chrome breather tube has to come off, and I'm missing a backing plate?

Is it like this one?

The only other parts I have are the outer circular air filter cover and the bits in the photo below.

Any help appreciated.
That IS the backing plate and all the hardware you need, save some 1/4-20 bolts, nuts and button head screws. You also need the K&N air filter element if you don't have it.

You also need two carburetor gaskets. the order is: carb gasket, then the spacer (the small black steel ring), then another gasket, then the large aluminum backing plate. There are two holes in the backing plate that lines up with the two brackets on your breather assembly. secure the backing plate to them with some 1/4-20 bolts and nuts. Then, use three 1/4-20 button head screws to fasten the backing plate, spacer and the plastic ring (which smooths the air intake path and goes on last) to the carb.

There would also be a short 3/8 diameter breather hose that runs from the breather tube to a fitting in the backing plate.

There's also a K&N air filter element that goes with this outfit. I believe it's still available.

If this doesn't make sense, pm me with your email address and I'll hunt up the instructions and scan them and send them to you.
