Default Clutch adjustment help needed.

I changed primary fluid and adjusted clutch today.this may be a stupid question but my lever has to go pretty far out to fully engage,I set cable with the spec.1/8" play but I have to let out handle further before it starts to engage.no clutch slip,if I take up more slack on cable thru cable adjuster will that give me a closer grab point or opposite. I'm wondering if my cable has stretched. Thanks

If you have the 1/8" play, then the cable is adjusted properly. If it engages and there's play, and disengages when you pull, leave it alone.

There are other clutch adjustments. You have the HD shop manual for your bike, right? And yeah, year, model?

95 RK I just went back out and tightened a turns,1/16 gap,I changed my handlebars to heritage 1-1/2 style a couple years ago and everything fit brakes ,wireing ect. But my braided clutch cable never really fit rite.it seems when I lock the front end or its fully turned it pulls the cable slightly. Im going to get a longer cable its at least 5yrs old now anyway.
I have shop manual,I adjusted clutch properly inside derby cover.

Bike should be cold when you adjust the clutch. Upright and reasonable level.
Loosen the cable all the way, then adjust the pushrod under the derby cover to spec.
Then adjust the cable to 1/8" of gap.

If problem persists, you may have an issue with the clutch ramp. Or you've got the wrong length cable for the bike.

I drained primary 1st to change fluid, why would it have to be level? To adjust rod and locknut ,I did it on stand.

You're fine. It's easier to accurately re-fill the primary if it is upright and plumb, but you can do it on the side stand as well.

^^^ Yeah, I normally do the clutch adjustment when I'm changing the primary oil. And it's easier to get the dang crowfoot wrench on it when it's upright....

Someone pointed out in another Forum thread the possibility of a bad adjuster thread or lets say rough spot, that made it feel like you bottom out. I know I would redo the adjustment and double check making sure I was truly at tension and not just the threads, back off the appropriate turns, and lock it down. Then adjust the cable, operate it a few times and test ride.
Just curious why the adjustment, general routine maintenance or was there an issue?

I noticed that the throw felt different,it usually starts to grab about 3" from the grip,so whenever I have adjusted clutch I have always changed primary fluid, 1-1/2 yrs ago.note there is no slip in clutch when accelerating. Just didn't feel normal.thanks for u guys input!
