800 Miles After Ground Up Motor Rebuild and...
#11
It could be worse. I think the motor was rebuilt I'm not sure what else was reused, I'll have to find out. This wasn't mine, I stopped in at a friend's I hadn't seen in awhile and he another guy were hoisting this up to strip it down. Got caught in a shed fire.

Damn,That just aint right. Sorry to hear that. Take it down to the best rebuild shop in town and have the Insurance pay for a new project, custom paint and all.
Never heard of new braided lines failing. Something don't sound right.
When I blew a head gasket There was oil everywhere but no fire, and the engine was hot off the highway.

That sucks, before whipping out my phone I probably would have whipped out something else and started pissing on it !!!! Even braided line should not be close to exhaust, especially that close to the head as it looks in the pic . Hope you track it down, should not take too much to get her going again but it does suck.

Damage assessment? Looks like it was put out with fire extinguisher?
I don't think I would have even thought about taking a pic while my bike was sitting there in flames...I would be scrambling around trying to find something to put out the fire. Scooping up handfuls of dirt or something....
Curious how the oil caught fire back there. Came in contact with exhaust pipe?
EDIT: Just found this for those who have a place to keep one: https://www.amazon.com/Professional-...e+extinguisher
Glad your OK. YD

I did try to put it out by trying to smother the fire with rags I had in my saddle bags. When that didn't work, I took them off. One of my riding buddies was on the phone with 911 and a police officer showed up and put it out with an extinguisher. Luckily he used a dry chem extinguisher. The fire department showed up right after and said they would have used water and it would probably cracked the engine cases.
I'm not sure how it caught fire, but the mechanic was thinking it may have been the vent or return line that burst having a combination of oil mist and combustion vapors that ignited.
I'll be looking for a portable dry chem extinguisher to keep in the bags.

It is a good thing I was coming to a stop...better than going down the highway and it start knocking from being oil starved.
If there's one thing I hate, it's being on fire.
Glad you're OK, man. Bike looks repairable. New seat, wiring harness, OIL LINES and you should be OK. What kind of lines were those? Did it smell like oil burning or plastic when you stopped? It's hard to get oil started. I wonder if there was a gas component starting it.

It did smell like burning oil and there was a really thick cloud of smoke when I stopped. Possibly a combustion mix with the oil?
After the fire burned, you could smell the burning plastic / rubber / foam.
