Don't know your current situation but if you can look around and find a nice Road King and put it on the road. Then you can compare the two.
I ride a Road King. Love the way that thing rides!

Aren't FXRs rubber mounted?
They are and do not allow the engine to jump halfway out of the frame like the touring bikes do.

Thanks, I think I'll take one for a ride. I have seen a few nice looking road kings around, but the current batch for sale around here all have high miles. There is a nice looking blue 98 with the carb, $4,000, which is pretty much exactly what I would want, but it has 78k miles on it. Should I be afraid? Or better off going with something for around $5,500 with 20-30k miles on it, which I have seen in the past.

If the bike was maintained then 78k ain't no big deal.
On the other hand I could get a lot of parts for $1,500.

Bikes are not like cars. The way a Road King feels and handles is different than a Heritage. It isn't just the rubber mounts.

Ride before you buy. What works for me might not work for you.

I'd say go look at the '98 for 4K. Might get it for less than that. Any of the EVOs are going to need the rubber mounts and other bits if they haven't been maintained. See what has been done to it all ready. Never know.
Any bike you get you know you're gonna do stuff to it to make it right for you.

My Evo Ultra Classic (96) is very smooth at 70-80mph. Just as smooth as my old twin Cam 88" Deuce. I'd say go with the Road King.

I've ridden the Evo Road King. I OWN an Evo Heritage Softail, which I've ridden for 206,000 miles and 23 years.

Either I'm tougher than most of you (which I doubt), or just don't know any better, but I think you know where I stand.

I prefer the "feel" of the Softail overall. Yes, the Road King is smoother at 75-80 (but not by much), but I don't like the extra shake at idle and low speeds. Then again, the Road King sits taller, and the handling feels "odd" to me due to the forward steering head.

Road Kings are slow, eye sore in public and the owners are usually "different" going to ride mine a few more years to see if I like it.
