Default 84 Harley FXR Solenoid Removal

I want to remove the solenoid on my 84 Harley FXR. The shop manual I'm using says to remove the pin at the end of the shaft. It does not say how to accomplish that. The attached picture highlights the pin I'm talking about.

I would very much appreciate it if someone would tell me how to do it. Thanks in advance for your help!

When you push the cup back, does not the pin slide out with just a slight tap? Sure you already have but make sure the negative cable is off the battery and can not drift over on the battery on it's own.. Note that I came up with this on the instructions on reassembling it in Chapter 9 of my service manual. However, it really does show it clearly and just calls out the washer. Your picture gives the impression that that washer is really a cup that encloses the pin and prevents it from falling out.

Does your 84 actually run an oil level in the primary or does it just use a drip and a return to the engine?

The 84 has a dry primary, same as back to at least '36. Oil feed line and a suction back to the oil pump. You can see the feed line in his pic over the chain tensioner.

Thanks for the feedback. Can anyone tell me how to push the cup back so I can drive the pin out? I have tried pushing it back with screw drivers but so far I haven't been able to get it far enough back to get the pin out.

Thanks again.

You are pushing against a spring. Similar to the spring you see on a little more modern version of a starter system. See it in the body with the 12 item label. The upper picture shows it 3 dots and lower shows dots together.. Be careful about levering that arm but I think you can lever over at the starter side. Don't break that aluminum arm. It should not be that strong a spring. Two fingers ought to lever it.

I assume it is similar enough to the shovel I have in that you don't remove that pin as it is part of the bendix mechanism rather than the solenoid end of it. On the inner side you should be able to just remove the two bolts holding it on and pull it free as it is not what is pinned but rather another part that activates the part the pin is going thru.

The solenoid pin is on far right in the parts that make up number 23 total. The pin you see is part of the plunger assembly in part number 12.

Griz

Yeah, I wondered about that. You don't have to get into the primary to pull the solenoid. Exactly what manual are you using?

I'm using the 1984 factory manual. I am going to have the inner primary powder coated so I need to completely dissemble it which requires the removal of the bendix system. At this point I think I have learned what I wanted to know. Thanks to everyone who provided advice.
