Three years ago I talked the previous owner down from 5500 to less than 5000, he had some extra pieces so I added back 200, full exhaust(had drag pipes on it), spare NEW starter, cover, some small items and OE chrome trim.

I added a AGM battery(not counted in value) had replaced all the shift linkage, the shift lever at trans, trans shifter seal, shift levers and pegs, both sprockets and belt as well past worn, replaced all the small covers due to as noted corrosion, had the carb fully overhauled and tank inlet seal gasket replaced. Otherwise just routine services and all fluids change once. I put 6200 miles on it so cost per mile was low as the repairs and small parts added up to over a grand.

He got it for $3500. I consider it as well worth that money, it is someone else's now and I am back to one bike.

If I wanted to 'get rid' of my 1993 FLHS, that would be the bottom dollar I would take for it. The older touring bikes, just aren't worth very much compared to a Springer or FXR (which seem to be more desirable right now).

I'm kinda in my own little world at times. Your reply prompted me to ask some questions while picking up some parts. A local Indy I like said there has been a slow down in his cycle sales. Does the consignment thing a good many bikes.

His second comment was " I have to get them in here at good price or forget it."

I'm out there fairly often, if his has slowed down he must have been real busy at one time

Sounds like you're reasonably happy, if not over the moon!

We have to remember that when our FLHSs were built H-D was struggling to make around 50k bikes a year. They can make 5/6 times that many nowadays, so it is not true to say there are too many earlier Evos around, as there never was - they were in short supply. More likely the market today is flooded by early TC88s, by which time the MoCo was turning them out at a far higher rate of production.

Young guy here - 26. I love my 89 sporty! It's basic enough that I'm able to wrench on it. I've owned a 2008 SV650 but the damn thing is so complicated and compact it's impossible to work on. There's something to be said for tried and true designs that were made to be field serviceable.

Right after purchase of the white bike, the market fell off and then realized the bike was a hobby and not a investment and years later I put enough money in it where I could of purchased another Evo. I value money but also go to work everyday to be able to have something that makes it worth slaving daily. Would estimate a $5000 loss even doing all the work if trying to sell the white bike as it sits BUT when I'm running down country back roads with good friends and talking crap with them at a not so updated watering hole, I'm in a priceless moment and a investment bike can't run like we run to bring happiness

You had the bike 3 years, and lost $1500. Screaming deal dude, you had a Harley that cost you $500 a year, or $42 a month. You did well.

Its the oldest story in the World....when you are looking to buy a ride "they are like hens teeth", "rocking horse sh**" Etc.,Etc.,youve heard them all .!
The opposite when selling .."theyre everywhere & cheap, others to see,too expensive to maintain" Etc.,Etc., thats the situation Ive always found myself in over the years when buying & selling. Youve bitten the dust, sold the ride and now 2017 is about to begin, youve done the right thing IMHO.
All the very best for 2017. Bungo
