Just did a overhaul on my stock carb on my 84 FXST. After a thorough de-gunking and blow job + a carb kit, it now runs good. One of my buds suggested going to a CV instead, said I will get much better performance. Anybody been through this? If I change, what should I consider? The motor is stock with the exception of shaved heads and drag pipes.

 

Sounds like it's "leave well enough alone" time to me. With pretty much a stock motor the CV isn't going to do much in the way of performance. Might start a little easier, but not easier enough to cover the cost and hassle.

 

The Keihin butterfly on my '84 wasn't worth squat. No matter what I did to it the bike ran bad. Changed it to a Super E and all is well.
If you can get a good cheap CV I'd run with it. I'm sure it has to be an improvement over the stock Keihin.

 

I replaced my ('89) Keihin butterfly and stock air cleaner with a CV and SE air cleaner, and it was the best thingI could have done. The difference was like night and day. Don't think twice -- just start looking for a good used CV.

 

That stock keihin is crap. I like the S&S shorty, but a CV would be a good choice also, I think, if you're familiar with tuning it.

 

No doubt, a CV is better than the butterfly. You would need new intakemanifold, filter, and cover, because the ones of your 84 won't work. I bought a set from one of the guys here and it's working out real good.

Second to that and a little/lot more cost is an S&S Super E or Mikuni HSR42.

Due to the lousy weather we are about to embark on for the next 5-6 months up here in Ontario it gives me time to find a good replacement and be ready for next season. Afraid the "BLACK QUEEN" will have to be mothballed @ the end of this month. Ride Safe

 

I got to agree with everyone about the cv,I did it and am very pleased with it.starts easier,responce is a lot better,and milage improved buy about 5 miles per.also u got time look for stock intake off 91 up evo for cv intake ,i got lucky an bought one for 5 bucks off indie back shelf. Nightrider.com has good info on modifing an tuning.the cv has got to be one of the easiest ones to tinker with an get right.

 

It's not too hard to get a used/take off CV for$50-60 off eBay.That's cheap money for a great carb. A good tuner can make these work beautifully.
