I have a 89 fxr and am looking at replacing the exhaust on the bike. I've found something I really like but it's made for a softy, will it still bolt up?

What interchanges with what?

You would recieve a better answer if you added more info.What pipe would you like to install?Drags 1 3/4",2", 2 into 1's,2 into 1's with a collector or smooth transition.There must be hundreds of options

Im not sure I would recommend those pipes without looking into them a little further.It looks like those pipes are supported by the flange alone,if thats the case they may work if you arent planning on riding the bike.If your riding it,then look for something a little less radical with some sort of bracket to support the weight of the pipe.

 

Unless you want to bend some metal, you pretty much have to get something made for FXR's. The engine in the softails is mounted straight up and down, where the engine in the FXR is tilted forward in the frame two degrees. Plus the pipes have to miss the mid-mount pegs on FXR's.

 

I just added a set of Vance & Hines to my 87 FXR. They came off of a 2001 Fat Boy, I had to make a small bracket and weld it to the top pipe. But other than that they were almost a direct bolt on and they sound great. Just remeber not to mount anything to the frame and only mount to the motor so when the motor "shakes" it does not break the pipes.

It looks like the pipes just mount to the engine. If that is the case I think you would be ok. I had to make a brakect that mounted just below the starter. But hey thats what welders and fabrication is for right?

Well I ordered the pipes, apparently theres quite a bit of difference from a softail to a fxr exhaust regarding mounting locations and such. There is a large bracket with these pipes incase anyone is intrested. It as well as the brackets welded to the pipes need modified.

I have cut off the brackets on the pipes, but still want to have them bent slightly. Not worried about the chrome as I plan to do away with it anyway....too much chrome to list doesnt do anything for me.

Anyway, I'll post more here as time allows about the progress.
