EVO 1340 : Primary & Transmission Oil - The Same Oil ?
- hi.
- have a '96 Heritage Softail with the 1340 EVO engine.
- want to do a complete fluid change (ie , engine, primary,
transmission, fork and brake) so that I can start my ownership
on a 'clean' sheet.
- went to the HD Dealership to get the oil.
- am told that there is only ONE TYPE of oil available,
ie , "HD FORMULA +" for BOTH the primary and transmission.
- but my owners and service manual quotes different oil
part numbers for the primary and transmission oils.
- could someone clarify the position ?
- has something changed over the years that HD no longer
makes different oils for Primary and Transmission ? Or that
oils have become smarter ?
- thanks.

Not sure what is up with the HD part numbers?
But, in my '97 Evo I run HD Formula (+ I belive is Syn) in my Primary, Redline heavy in the Tranny and Mobil-1 V-twin in the crankcase.
There are as many opinions as there are Harley owners regarding what lubricants to use.
My opinion is: HD Formula seems to give me the best clutch performance without slip, Redline is very thick and quiets and protects my tranny, V-Twin is very available at my local Wal-mart and my Evo seems to like it and runs quiet with it.

- on the bottle of the "HD Formula +" oil , itmentions
that its meant for BOTH primary and transmission systems.
- did something happen over the years ?
- or am I being paranoid ...

Yes the Formula + is for both primary and trans, HD switch a year or so ago. You can no longer get the primary and trans fluids in seperate bottles unless it is old stock, they don't make them anymore. Me personally, I will use it in the primary, but I am switching to redline shockproof heavy for my transmission. I found it localy at the Jeg's store.

Do you need to flush the transmission to get the old oil out and if so what do you use?

- Hi.
- am going to be a doing a complete fluid change on my 1996
Heritage Softail Classic.
- don't think that I will be flushing the thing. Perhaps a good
warm up , and then letting the thing drain till its happy.
- glad for the replies above , helped alot.
- ( that and searching here answered my query about
where the HECK is the transmission drain bolt on my
harley !!! .... )
