The 27 is a good choice for an all round street cam, good lod and mid range. Too much cam will cause you to loose your bottom end torque.

Georges garage has Harley tools for a very resonable prices. In a pinch you can rent a small blind hole puller from place like Advance auto etc. and use the old cam to install the new bearing, this method has been used on hundreds, if not thousands of Harley engines. Hope this helps.

If he (or me) were to just take the bike to an INDY for the cam switch, what would be a good "ballpark figure"?

I was just quoted $700 for the cam install with ez-install pushrods and new bearing. Seemed high to me, so I've decided to do it myself.

If you are mechanically Inclined at all, it isn't a difficult task to do yourself. Lot's of good instructions here and on various web sites. The hardest part is pulling the inner cam bearing and that's not hard with the proper tools.

This thread caught my eye as i just acquired a 1996 Electra glide and looking at the cam upgrade as one way to improve MPGs, too. Mine is hanging out in the low to mid 30s.
Found this kit http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ANDRE...Q5fAccessories

but they don't specify any details on make of bearing (torrington is what is required) or the maker of the pushrods.

Sounds like a good deal but personally I am a skeptic when I don't know what brand of parts I am paying for. Cheap lifters can be a grenade when things go bad and GOOD lifters are still a personal opinion but whith a Harley - cheap isn't always better. The EV27 still gets a good price on the market, email him and see if he will list manufactures of the parts, might turn out to be a great deal.

You will need a tuning device if you have the MM efi or some carb work after the cam change, some hidden costs if you have efi.

Guy says bearing is Torrington and the pushrods are Maddog. In my case I am running the standard CV which has been adjusted for high-flow air breathers and improved exhaust. I believe the originator of this thread was similarly configured.
