1998 FLHT and an S&S 113...
I've been riding for years, but am finally ready for a little project and a bike that I can put some miles on. I just bought a 1998 FLHT and am planning on pulling the S&S 113 out of my hard tail chopper and doing an engine swap. The 113 has low miles and should make a great motor for the FLHT... and since there is basically no market for hard tail bar hoppers right now I might as well make good use of the motor.
Anyone have any insight for me as I head down this road? Just got the FLHT home and hoping to dive into this project in January.
Thanks for any help.

The 113 doesn't have the compression releases, wish it did. I didn't have starter problems with the chopper, but often had battery issues with the very small battery. I am thinking that the larger (or normal size) battery on the FLHT should help my battery issue. I am pretty sure I will have to upgrade the starter on it. Anyone have any recommendations for a starter for the FLHT that will be reliable with the 113?

Heres what I can tell you about starters, and it ain't much. I was having starter issues on my '96. I finally gave up and bought a new Ultima 2.0
Its a true monster! Its physically larger than the stock unit, and requires more power than a stock battery to power it correctly as well. I happened to have installed a glassmatt 330cca when I first bought the bike so I was all set. Heres what I found. That sucker spins my motor over like theres no spark plugs in it. It doesn't even sound like its trying. Now, that being said, I have a bone stock 80 inch motor, not a stroker, but the difference was extremely dramatic. Now, I have only had it maybe 6 months, but in both 105 degree heat with the motor completely heat soaked and in 30 degree cold weather, it didn't make a lick of difference. That engine whips over and whips over fast. I paid $135 for it and its pretty amazing so far.

It pisses me off that I don't have that motor in my bike, look into a Energy One clutch or one that can handle the power to weight ratio, your gonna need it.
A Pro Pipe or Fatcat will also help with letting the big dog eat in the lower rpm's, TD's sound better but get all you can out of it. You can build a left ghost pipe for the Pro Pipe for very little money if you need the TD look, the Fatcat has a left pipe available to purchase.

On one of my builds 1999 with an S&S 113 we put a spyke 2.4 KW starter on after the new 1.4KW didn't get it After talking to S&S I found out that alot of these motors were being shipped out without the limited travel spacers in the hyd lifters They said their supplier was running out so they sent the motors out without them ! Thankyou Well after they finally sent me a set the hard starting issues stopped These HL2T washers when installed make the hyd lifters semi solid and alot easier to crank over the motor We went with a Rivera-Primo Pro-Clutch system BDL's work great also HD's stock clutch system might get you by ?

I have an S&S 107 in my 1990 bike. Not quite the performance as your 113 should give, but closer than a stock engine. Mine has automatic comression releases, so I still have the original stock starter. I did replace the primary chain and compensator, as they were showing signs of wear, also fitted a Barnett clutch pressure plate and spring. That's it!
If you were going to a 124" or bigger, a complete clutch and bigger starter motor are a must. I even looked into a billet 131" and the recommendation for that beasty was a fresh gear cluster as well. If and when I go that route I will use a Zippers tuned Andrews set.

I would be happy to fit a really BIG motor and sort out any problems afterwards.
