How do you clean out on old gas tank.
I know how to use the search tool but would like a current conversation with current active members.
This is not specific to EVOs other than the fact that's what I have, and because it's an older bike it has this issue. I want to know more about how to properly address it.
Last summer I bought my '86 FLTC and proceeded to restore it back to like new condition to make certain it'll be reliable for many more years.
I had an issue with the bike running that lead me to drain the tank and pull the petcock. I discovered large strands of gray paint like material sloshing in the tank and wrapped around the filter. I flushed it with gas until the debris was cleared away.
I later had issues with the stock petcock cracking and leaking at the plastic outlet where it bends 90 degrees. It was old plastic and had fracture lines that began leaking.
So I pulled the petcock (again) and of course there was a little more debris just a month after having wash it out.
I've heard of several remedies as I've read around the boards but I thought I'd make this concern a question and see what some others have to say.
Looking for your suggestions as to why the inner tank lining (?) is pealing away from the tank and what I should be doing before it goes back on the road this spring.
Thanks in advance for help and advice.

I'm now thinking about a local, long time gas tank "renu" company that might do it, and maybe for the same cost, or not much more than the do-it-yourself kit.
I have grown to hate working on the tank / petcocks. Can't seem to touch it without always winding up with gas on my hands, clothes, etc. As I kid I used to wash parts for my minibike and lawnmowers in a tub of raw gas and now even the slightest amount on me or my clothes really bothers me. You should have seen me the day I filled my bike and left the cap off and closed it up and road .... whew, soaked all the way to my underwear and privates. Lesson learned.

honestly I don't blame you if youd "pay someone".....
as finiky as what these damned liners seem to be it would be worth it (to me ) to spend the coin for the "peace of mind" of having someone else reputable to do it..especially if they're under like $100 or so
I'm all about wrenching my own stuff but OCCASIONALLY some things it's just not worth the trouble...
