Default Help with removing starter from 1999 fatboy

My starter is making a ginding noise it starts but sounds like rocks rolling around when you hit the button. I have pulled the primary all looks good in there. I have gotten the jackshaft loose. I have gotten the mounting bolts out. Do I have to remove the oil tank to be able to do this. the manual says you may have to loosen them but I haven't really been able to do anything with them loosened either. HOw do I get this thing out the side of the bike? Looks like the cables are my only problem now. Please help.

You may have to take the tank out as there is bugger all room in there. Its hard enough just getting the bolts undone!

on mine if i take all the tank bolts out & zip-tie (get long ones from work) the tank tight to the frame under the seat it'll buy me about 1/4-1/2" ....just enough room to wiggle the ba$tard out. if i dont get the tank tight to the frame & its just loose.....she aint coming out for nobody

Ditto on the zip ties. I just had to pull my inner primary to put on my belt drive and I used zip ties to hold the tank up out of the way.
