Default have you run a windshield on an early fxr?

Hi,

I have a early 90's fxrsp.
This is an fxr with the 13.5 " shocks and the longer fork tubes.
The fairing has been removed from this bike by the previous owner.
This bike has substantially less rake than a dyna. I am wondering if anyone has run a handlebar or fork mounted windshield on one and had wobble issues at high speed.

Thanks
Joe

I have a 90 fxrs-sp, what fairing would the previous owner have taken off? My factory manual shows none. Mine did have a windshield which I removed, but never affected driveability. According to the manual, the sp has longer wheel base than the standard fxr.

The bike is a police model. It still has the Police air cleaner trim and Speedo.
I thought that Police bikes came with a fairing originally? I really don't know for certain that is why I am here looking for people like yourself who might know. There could be a police model parts book for that year I'm not sure. We have an 88 police bike which has uses it's own parts book.

I am still figuring out what you can and cannot do to fxr's.
I'd like this one to handle well and have a fairing or a windshield.
I need to keep it as light as possible other than that.
I did not realize till you posted that they were available with a factory fork mounted windshield . That is good to know. I was concerned that they might have too little trail and rake for using a fork mounted Shield. Obviously not.

Thanks for the information. It was a huge help.

Yes I have a HD clamp on windshield. It works great, easy on and off. I do not feel that handling is greatly affected when it is on my FXR.

It never occurred to me that you might have a police model, that's a different can of worms. That said, if it was safe for cops, I'm sure you'll be fine.

I've run the quick detach one, I've also tried the Windvest. Both worked ok, didn't provoke speed wobbles or anything. I currently run a Rifle Roadster fairing with a 15" windshield, it's the most stable feeling of the three and creates the least dirty air of the three.

I ride a customized '84 FXR -- most significant to the windshield is a WG front end. I've never had a windshield in 40+ yrs of riding, until two yrs ago. Got stung in the face too many times and was starting to develop a pretty nasty allergy to those little bastards. Decided to go w/ a Windvest -- best decision I ever made. It's stable at least up to 100 mph (roads out here aren't good enough to go any faster, and the tickets are real costly), and compared to riding w/o one, it's sorta like sitting in my recliner watching a TV show from somebody's helmet mounted camera. Hell, no wonder my shoulders ached after 6+ hrs in the saddle!!! Also, haven't been stung since I put it on...
