Default Ignition switch for 1996 FLH

Was hopping you guys could help me out here. My ignition switch works but when I turn it to fork lock and lock it nothing happens you can still turn the front end. Is this something in the switch mechanism or is it elsewhere??

I have a chiltons service manual and it does not describe how to take the 1996 switch off or install a new one

Thanks

my book says:
to remove **** turn key to unlock. turn **** to access . depress button with small screw driver while pushing key down, turn 60 degrees counter clockwise. lift and remove ****.
button shows to be underneath side of **** on bottom left from top view.
then theres 2 screws and the shaft nut

Same **** happened in a heritage I had once. All electronic ignitions on Harley's of that year if stock, are essentially the same technology. It's most likely 99.99999% in the switch /mechanism . Not super hard to change. I did mine in like an hour and a half, but I had a couple brothers over, and we drank a few beers, twisted one up and lost my friends car keys behind the tool bench and spent like ten minutes looking everywhere but there before we found them. so your actual install time may vary depending on your altitude.

Good luck, let us know how it goes.

Have you got the front end turned all the way to the left when you lock it? I have to give mine a little extra nudge to the left until it clicks, then it's locked. If you Do have to replace the switch, it's a simple job, as stated above. Took me about an hour, but my Harley work ethic is similar to JoBoo's. Drink a beer, take a break, yak with friends, then back to work.

I have a brand new switch for my 1995 flht I'll never use. If it will fit your bike, and you need one, lets make a deal!

Have you tried lubing the little pin that protrudes from the bottom of the switch and actually locks the fork? I had the same problem a while back and that was the solution - the switch itself was locking, but the pin was stuck in place.
