Posted this on the tranny section, no response. This bike was not driven and still is not for over 5 years. When on the side stand, trans oil drips out. I assume it is trans oil and not primary oil (just filled the trans oil up )

Any ideas on this? Maybe drive it and seals soften up? I do not have dye for the oil but that might be next step, although it is noticible from underneath that it is inner trans.

I am not happy about riding /test riding with this oil leak where it is.

 

In my modest experience it is most likely to be coming from the oil seal on the output shaft of the trans, behind the front pulley. To get to it involves removing the outer cover and primary, in other words compensator and clutch. There is a 'door' in the back of the primary which gives access to the pulley and when that is off, the seal. When replacing that seal, also replace the one in the door. It won't seal itself by magic, only replacement!

 

Fill the Tranny with gas, leave overnight, re fill with oil (after taking the gas out) this is an emergency measure only, like if you sprung a leak in death valley and had to get the bike out and the nearest seal shop was 200 miles away through hostile territory.

grbrown suggests replacing seals;makes sense. Where do I get instruction on how to do ? Any special tools required? These sites should have "how to " sections complete with pictures for novice like myself. I have a service manual but that seems to be too complex to follow. Any suggestions?

 

Yes it does require special tools. All details are in your factory service manual! If you don't have one get one asap. There are umpteen videos out there on servicing Harleys, so bound to be some that will help.

I have a drip on trans seal also ,Is it possible to add a thicker oil to slow drip until I can pull Primary and properly replace all seals this Fall ,I'm using HD Formula Pri/trans fluid now.

 

In days gone by we used to joke that Harleys always leave their calling card - in other words an oil drop or two! If it is not leaking too much, clean the oil off if necessary and ride on. Keep a close eye on it just in case it gets worse, as you don't want oil on your rear tyre. I wouldn't change oil personally.

I rode my Glide for a couple of years with a leaking seal, before replacing it. Made dismantling the rear end very easy, because it was all nicely lubricated! Just trying to look on the bright side.....
