Default Cam seal question(s)

I'm replacing my cam seal in the nose cone, cone is still on the bike.

How deep do seat the new seal? There is what looks like a drain hole in the bottom/end of where the seal goes and it looks like if I seat it all the way in it might block that off..Just checking I already did it..

I have a James Seal and I could almost push it in by hand, that can't be right?? I put some permatex form a gasket on the outer edge and greased the sealing surface...

One tap and it went all the way in, I'm thinking about taking a ride to the Harley dealer and getting one of their seals...

Any advice is appreciated,

Thanks - Ds

Outside face of the seal should be flush with the face of the timing/cam cover. Loose is no good.

Thanks,

I'm a bit concerned that the seal might be blocking part of that drain hole, it easily went all the way to the back when I tapped it with a deep well socket. It is not flush with the outer edge but the one I took out was not either. If I find another seal locally I might re-do it.

I replaced mine last year while the cone was on the bike. I used an HD seal and as spanners said I made it flush. And it was not easy to press in. I would just keep an eye on it and see if it leaks. You can always replace it again.

For the hole you are talking about I cannot honestly remember one on mine. What did your other seal look like? And was it also flush?

06,

I remember you doing your's, The seal I took out looks just like the one I put in and it's made by James, it has a rubber coating even on the outside edge. If you ever work with these beware, that outside edge is so flimsy that the screw threads from the sheetmetal screw one uses to remove the seal can cut right through it and mar the inside of the nosecone-yeah it just happened to me...I'm not having a good time with this (easy) repair..

Take a look at the attached picture, it looks to me that if the seal is all the way in, the back edge could possibly block part of that drain hole (see arrow)....

Anyway, I'm picking up a new seal after work and am going to redo it...

Thanks

Ds..

I changed mine when I changed my cam, and it's leaking. Got oil seeping out of where the timing wires leave the nose cone. It was a bitch to get in, is there holes I need to line up when I replace it? Don't recall seeing any. Any specific method to ensuring they are lined up?

Reece,

No holes to line up, just get it straight and flush with the nosecone according to these guys. It takes a little patience to get it straight when doing it with the cam in the way. From what I've read, if you just replaced it and still have a leak, do it again. If still a leak, you might want to consider a worn bushing-but I'm no expert as you can see..LOL

I just re-did mine, Hope nothing leaks
