RE: Any early '80s limited editions still kickin?
I have an early 1985 fxef with the 4 speed and chain drive-only 2340 made in this configuration.Pretty much stock.
also have a 1985 fxrp ( 5 speed and belt drive). The fxrp has been modified-S &S carb system and the prior owner also took off the exhaust and put on forward controls after removing the crash bars and side boards.

Got a casual friend in NC that bought brand new, an 84 evo softail FXST (IIRC?) back in 1984..
Rode it home & removed the battery & it NEVER moved since. Maybe 9 miles on it..
He is more into the older bikes...(so am I, but I need my evos too)..
He bought it cause a friend talked him into it..
Recently he began thinking of selling it..
I have to wonder how much would need rebuilding after sitting that long..

Not many people know this, so keep it just between us. I have part of a special edition on my 1990 FLHS. After I had owned it a few years I decided I could use a tourpak and answered an ad in a bike mag.
I live in the UK and someone had imported a secondhand 1986 Statue of Liberty 100th Anniversary Glide, just to chop it! All that was left was the tourpak, now repainted birch white and on my dresser.
It had obviously seen a lot of use. The interior was dirty, so I washed it and flushed it through. Out from under the floor I took USD2.87 in small coins, several old cigarettes, hair bands, you name it!
There - I feel better now....

Why all the apparent surprise at all the old EVO's still running. Probably the best Harley engine, and certainly the last real Harly sounding engine around.
I have an 1986 Heritage Softail with 55000 odd miles on the clock, probably one of the first produced. I think it was first sold and registered in the USA, imported into the UK at some stage and then into Ireland in 1991 wher I live.
All that has changed are the pipes and carb(S&S). Did a trip to LaMans 24 Hour last June and about a 1200 mile trip for a week after, never missed a beat and I would have no hesitation heading off again, (probably because I do all my own wrenching) It now has white wall tyres that make it look even better.
I love it!!!!!!!!!!
