Don't have points in my '86 Softail, but am of the age that I well remember them in cars. Seldom had to change them, take them off, clean/file them, clean contacts in cap, re-fit and gap. It would have been more usual to change the rotor or cap (both can crack with heat and spark jumps). Also the condenser might have to be changed.

Also check the plug/high tension leads.

If cash tight it is worth a try.
They are worn out and arcing. Bike idles rough and misses ignition sometimes. Filed them and readjusted point gap.ran great for two days. Had to put her away for a little since my bags came flying off on the road. Real pisser.
Now she wont even starT. the spark plugs are brand new and the leads seem fine.. I have another post about this under Lost and livid same category

Sparking all over points is either dirt or stuffed condensor.

The holes in the point contact area serve two purposes, first they "vent" the contact surface area to prevent the small build up of gases in that area. Secondly on full contact points you get a transfer of metal from one point to another,

I always wondered about that.
Now I know, and Knowing is half the battle. lol

Hey thanks for all of the great info, i Put Cranehi4 in her (dual-fire) and works beautifully!
