A friend of mine is in hospital with serious burns. He had a bucket of gas full of clutch plates and was taking them out one at a time and setting them on fire to decontaminate them (old school trick), he slipped and fell and turned himself into a fireball......be careful out there...

Love and peace indeed. Ye gods, hope he recovers soon. I can recall cleaning my shovel clutch plates in petrol, but not with a bucket of gas!

Burns the worst damn thing to deal with Sorry for your friend. After all these years i still use gas and know better not too. But now its in a coffee can and outside away from everything. No flames unless i am 3 feet away.

I wish your friend a speedy recovery. Burns really suck.

Would you explain to a newbie what he was trying to accomplish and why?

Use kerosene, it's less volatile

I ran a burn unit for a month. DON'T PLAY WITH GASOLINE.

I hope your friend does OK. He will have a long hard way to go, if he lives.

Oh, and a better trick to decontaminate clutch plates is to put them in the oven and bake them until they stop smoking. Best not to do that when the OL is around.

Plates get contaminated over time and there are a few options to cleaning them (brake linings too) you can boil them in laundry detergent (safe) you can bake them in the oven, as suggested above (safe if your OL doesn't catch you), or you can set fire to them (not in the slightest bit safe) Steve is an old timer and very old school in his methods.....I wish he had brought the job to me to do.
