EVO Pinging
I need some good advice.....finished upgrades...97 FLSTS,to SE heads, HQ cam, Mikuni42, and Dyna 2000i ignition....im still having pinging problems. I have the VOES connected and have retarted the timing and still on throttle roll-ons and traveling up assending grade im still pinging....not sure if I have bad voes or what the prob is.....any suggestions on where to start looking ?

RE: EVO Pinging
i had the same problem with my 90 fxstc after a local shop set the timing. i finally restarted it two marks on the timing plate and it ran better and started better so i retarded it another two marks and come to find out when i checked the timing i was right on, they must of had it 10-15 degrees off. i was running high octane gas with a booster and it would still ping, the shop told me that was normal, don't think so. im running 165 lbs compression with a ev 27 cam and a S&S super e. i can run on regular gas, if i choose, but run premium.

RE: EVO Pinging
Hope this helps
Ihave a 99 evo with a crane Hi4 single fire ing.It has the option of running one of two ing settings,VOES & Race.Just for $hits & giggles I put it on the VOES setting (nominal advance curve) & it started pinging like nobodys buisness. While on VOES I advanced the timming trim pot & the pinging declined ,but was still there.Went back to Race mode,"retarted" timming trim pot & the ping stop alltogether & picked up some bottom end torque in the process. The race mode ,I suppose has a more agressive advance curve.
By the way, I'm getting an almost "perfect" burn on my spark plugs in race.IMO

Our '90 FLHTCU has a similar problem after the top end was done, I tried a colder plug and reducing the timing advance curve on the Hi4 ignition but it did not eliminate the problem.
I have read that if you increase the VOES setting it will eliminate the problem of pinging with engines that have been modified and have higher compression.

I removed my VOES, dug out the cone as described and turned in the screw about 1/2 turn which raised it a from about 6 to a little above 7
The bike ran and seemed OK but because of the rain, I only ran it a couple miles.
I also ordered a new VOES set at 7 from http://www.daytona-twintec.com/model_1005.html#paypal

Harbor Freight Tools web site has a cheap vacuum pump with guage on sale (16.99?) and they have the Mighty Mac on sale for $29.99 in the Harbor Freight stores if you want to spend more. I also think the local stores will honor the web site prices if you take in a printout of the web page.
If this doesn't work I will try using "race mode" with my Hi4 as described above. I am not concerned about losing a little power, just want to be able to cruise around without worry that something going wrong. On ours, pinging was more pronounced after cruising a while at lower rpms, which fit the description of having the VOES set too low for the current engine status.

RE: EVO Pinging
After much experimental changing of the timing and VOES , I found that adding one 12 oz bottle of STP "Jet Fuel" octane booster they sell at all the gas stations cured my pinging problems, but concerned that adding over 2 oz per gallon may be too much in the long term. After running out 3 gallons of the STP treated gas I added 3 with no additional octane booster and the ping on mine came back - 1 oz per galleon was not enough, little over 2 is great. I checked the plugs after 200 miles and they were lightly coated with a copper/flesh color, not sure what that means as I never saw the plugs look like that.
(Mine has 10:1 pistons, EV-27 cam, Crane Hi4 single fire ignition, larger valves and springs)

RE: EVO Pinging
At 10:1 you need to be running the best premium fuel you can purchase and probably an additive. Or start buyingyour gas at the local airport.
The quality of gas (it seems) isn't what it used to be 'back in the day' when high compression engines ruled the road. Most people I've talked to say a 'mild increase' to 9-9.5:1 (stock is 8.5:1)is the best solution for performance on an EVOand the ability to run pump premium gas.
