Default starter problems

im thinking my starter has given up the ghost. at least the solenoid part. i had the dreaded click..... did a solenoid rebuild kit, didnt help, so all last year i used my lil push button ( on the solenoid)to start it. even then it didnt start well.
so this week, i did the second relay. still no go. now it seems that when it makes contact, it doesnt have enough juice to turn it over, and it wont "spit it back out" every time, when you let go of the start button.
this is with a full charged battery, and the booster on it for good measure.

so...........can a guy just replace the solenoid part? or is it time for a whole new starter? which is THE starter for these evo dressers? how much work is it to replace? i can turn a wrench......

Did you load test the battery?

FWIW a friend of mine had the shop rebuild his starter and it didn't help but when he had them put in a new starter all was good.
This was on a '97 Heritage.

Personally I like the stock starter.

Remove the starter and have the windings checked out by any auto. elec. shop.
If all is well , rebuild it yourself with bearings etc. and you are good to go.

Charge the battery and have it load tested. If it is old, just buy a new one.

All connections must be clean and secure.

Take a look inside the solenoid, the plunger shaft may be packed full of dried grease and crud. If you pull the plunger, make sure the little ball is there before you re install it.

Since the starter does not start properly even when you use the manual button to actuate the solenoid, you can eliminate the solenoid windings as a problem.

If the solenoid is making the proper connection between the battery and the starter motor, and it still is not cranking, it must not be getting enough current (battery, cable) or there is a problem somewhere downstream of the solenoid contacts (rare).

ok....from the very first time i opened the solenoid end cover, there was never any lil ball in there. maybe a PO lost it? the spring was also broken, but all there(as far as i know). seems someone had been in there...

at this point, i have a whole new starter on the way from jireh, a 1.4 ultima. this thing is gonna start decent come hell or high water this year. when i pull the outer primary for the replacement, ive heard alot of people use ATF for the refill. any thoughts on that?

thanks

the ball is inside the starter...you won't see it just pulling the plunger out. you actually have to disassemble the starter itself to get at it.
