I can't imagine getting a good result with a helicoil on a thread that small! and you can't go up a size because of the pillar bolt. I am lucky, I have a tame engineer just down the road and in this situation I would get a new pillar bolt made up with an oversize male thread.

Had one in my cam cover for 15 years now...seems to work...I doubt the JB will hold for long.

Why not just tap it one size bigger in metric, maybe you can get something between standard sizes?

yep, helicoil it. problem with jb is if you didn't get a good mix on it it will be nice and smooth on the outside, but porous (sandy looking) on the inside. when you drill and tap it the the threads will be really grainy and will break out easily.

The problem with it is the nature of these screws that hold the timing plate on... the screws are threaded themselves and allow the inner plate to screw into the screws that hold the timing plate on... it's not an easy fix either way you go about it.

TD, take the cam cover off, pull the ignition timer, pop it in a drill press, and heli-coil it.

No need to remove the cover, can be helicoiled in a couple of minutes in place.

I tapped the jb weld and took it for a ride. Came home and pulled the screw out and it's holding. I'm going to ride it for a bit and keep checking it.

I had this same problem a few month ago on the bike im building
I tried the helicoil it was to small of a hole to get it to seat right
so I used a time-sert it worked perfect and is stronger than stock

I do think I'm either going to time-sert or have the hole tig welded, drilled and re tapped.
