Default Starter install question on 1986 flhtc

I am going to replace my starter assembly, not just the motor I think they are built as an all in one unit. I wanted to know if, on my 86, do I have to remove the clutch basket or is it two bolts and I take it out?

Just wanted to know what I have to look forward to

Thank you

If it is anything like mine, a 90FLHTCU just remove the outer primary, bend the tabs back on the star bolt and undo the bolt. Move to the other side of the bike, disconnect the + from the Batt, then from the starter. Remove the blade connector wire and the two mounting bolts with Allen heads. Unless it is braced to the exhaust cross-over it will pull out now. Reverse for install. This is rated at a 4 beer project at average temperatures, 60' to 88' when a garage is used. If any friends help multiply beer difficulty factor by 6 per person assisting. Hope this helps.

Mine is the separate starter assembly from the solenoid, only made for three years. I don't think it is that simple, I believe I have to pull the clutch basket .

to change the starter you do not have to pull the clutch just take the 2 bolts out of the starter shaft housing slide it out

You have the Hitachi style starter. The starter motor and the reduction gear assembly are two distinct units. There's no reason to replace the reduction gear assembly unless there's something wrong with it, which ain't likely. The starter motor it's self sould come right off. The newer reduction gear style starters require more work as the whole thing is in one unit.

Default starter

It should be exactly like mine, If you are doing just the starter remove batt cable from big lug on starter and batt disconnect! I had a bracket on the end that bolted to the tranny for support, unbolt it and the two bolts at head of starter should pull right out.
