i,m betting on a bad cable, i have had the main power wire brake at the key switch also. could be loose or fraying

 

I had a very similar problem. happened very occasionally to start with and got progressively worse.

Eventually traced it tothe ignition coil.

 

I pulled the starter and kill buttons switches apart last night, the wiring and switches looked like new. Im going to clean the ignition switch connectors tonight and see if that does anything. I did have a shop put a starter on about 5 years ago and some 14 inch apes about 6 years ago. Im guessing I will find my problem has something to do with those jobs. At least the bike is still dead so I should know what the problem is when I eventually find it.

 

I'm hoping your problem was as easy to fix as mine - cleaning the contacts in the main switch is easy, all you need is a pair of snap ring pliers (you can do it without but they make it easy and are cheap).

 

Did you test them?

 

Had the same problem a few months ago and also 'serviced' the ignition switch ... haven't had a problem since.

 

The ignition and the starter quitting, and the headlight still bright...is most likely to be in the kill switch wiring as you have surmised...did they spice the wires when they added the apes?

 

The apes was prewired when bought. I have never looked where the shop spliced them in. That will be the next place I check out.

 

Ok, here is my latest find on this issue. I found four broken wires in the steering neck area that had got pinched off. I wired them back together but starter still wont roll over. All the lights are working. If I run a wire direct from battery to the starter switch wire and push the starter switch it rolls over. Is there a fuse somewhere that could be blown from when the wires got pinched off ? My bike has four of the metal fuses in the fuse box but as far as I can see there is no way of checking them to see if one is bad or which one could be for the starter switch wiring?
