Default Another timing question....

Anyone know which instructions are right for a '98 Road King timing marks?? The shop manual claims the double dot needs to be used, and this other diagram, I got from somewhere here at one time, states that the double dots are for 20*, to ignore them and use the single dot for 35*.. Trying to make sure I'm focusing on the right marks..

unless you have an international model one dot at 1300 to 1700 rpms

find your sweet spot by ear and riding. I always tinker for two weeks till I have optimal mpg smoothness and butt dyno feel

Interesting observation. I've used the double dots for 35* at 1700rpm. At this setting, the single dot becomes 5*..... This is with a Dyna2000p ignition by the way.. Anyhow, with the VOES wire shorted as directed by the instruction sheet, I get the results above.. With the wire ungrounded, disconnected, the double dots become 5*. So, I'm getting a 30* swing from the VOES input and it appears I should be using the double dots. I'm not noticing any ping or performance issues on setting #2, very little ping under a low RPM load on #1.. All ears for experienced advice or agreement..

This engine shouldn't be international. If I use the single dot, I'm thinking I'd be adding another 30* to my current set up. I'm not doubting you Pine, just having a difficult time believing that's right on this particular engine..

Single dot is 20 deg BTDC.(don't use this one!!!!!!!!)
Double dot is 35 deg BTDC. (this is the one you use!!!!!!!!!!)

Get a hold of aces&eights.
He just went through this whole thing and has a better way to do it per Dynatech.

Yea, we've been talking already.. Seems Dynatek is a little inconsistent in their recommendations. But his is definitely dialed in.. The question is really my damn Dots, which you just verified for me.. I think I'm good to go, but that single dot aint 20* on this engine.. Thanks!

That's crazy, the first pic I have above is out of my manual... I do appreciate the input guys, I guess I'm going to stick with the double dots though. It just runs too damn good and it was 3* from the static time..

A little more info I've come across on the Dynatek/VOES operation.. It appears that the module simply uses the VOES input to ground the module and instantly drive it to 35* when the vacuum goes away. They call it "quick advance".. So, that sounds like it may have been why removing it fixed your ping aces.. Essentially, you've slowed your advance and let the module do what it does..

HGM by the first set's of picture you posted, I still read it as 2 dots is international in both sets of pictures. Pretty sure you want 1 dot.
