I made one out of a manilla file folder. I had the hypercrapper off and on due to rubber grommets failing when I bought it. There are 2 on mine due to spacer required.

your dealer is right if it will make you feel better run it , or if you can see light between the backing plate & carb run it , flash light from bottom up will let you know , as for K&N one on my bike & one on my truck with 295 + K miles on it (01 Dodge diesel ) clean it ever so often & good to go

from years of playing in the dirt there's no filter better at filtering out dirt than a foam filter. yes the K&N filter flows a little bit better when clean but as it gets dirty it starts to lose cfm. the foam will flow the same dirty or clean
an still trap 60% more dirt than a K&N we stopped selling the K&N because they just don't filter very well.

yes for the dirt the foam is best hands down , but if you keep the K&N clean they work just great on the street ,I clean mine every few months or as needed no problem yet & I've run them for many years each to there own I guess

Frugal? I didn't ask how much they were...... I asked if they were necessary.
