They provided one for my bikes over the years so I figure that means it needs one. If mine was damaged I'd just fabricate one. But, I would definitely run the gasket. Someone said cereal box, that sounds like a plan to me.

As far as K&N filters, I have run them for many years. They keep out the big chunks and that's apparently good enough. I had a buddy in the air force who used panty hose as a air cleaner on an old honda chopper. Now that's virtually useless.

Its a air gasket ... make one of the same specs. with whatever is applicable.
Re: air filters ... spend what you want on the biggest advertisers ( K/N ) but realise that you are spending stupid amounts of money on a friggen air filter .
There are many different types of engine air filters ... see any tech. section of military applications and go figure .?

K/N is a oil wet based cotton concoction that has been around for 100 years and in my opinion is just another aftermarket cash grab.
Purchase a good quality air filter and replace it every year .

So what's the best air cleaner I can use that fits my "Big Sucker" backing plate and my 7" round cover? Keep in mind that it will have to deal with some oil mist from the head breathers

IMHO you can't go wrong with a K&N filter. I just check mine over when I drop oil. Just another step in routine maintenance.

I have the Big Sucker on my97 Glide. Was at a local indy when I noticed breather cover was loose. Got to cking it and the nut to hold the cover on had broken out of the filter. CJ told we have one. The filter was blue? Cost me 40 bucks and he commented they are just as good as any K&N. Told me he gets from Drag Specialties. Clean and oil them just like a K&N. Which this reminds me bout time to ck mine for a cleaning. Priced one from Arlen Ness 80 bucks
