By the time the trapdoor is off and the shafts have been partially disassembled as per my method its easy to get the crap out...I know, I've done it...don't over think these things....

My understanding, from the time I had my 1990 spring replaced, is that the year of bike affects how much work is involved in replacing that spring. Later bikes are easier to get at through the top of the trans case, but in earlier bikes the shifter shaft cannot be removed without removing the gear cluster. The gear cluster was redesigned in 1994.
You can remove the entire gearset, or just the trap door on the right side using the special tool. I think the OP did the right thing by removing the gearset in this instance.
The change to the gears in the mid `90s was in the cut of the gears, to reduce noise.
For the parts, mineral spirits, diesel or kerosene, or a proper parts cleaning solvent like safety kleen. Not gasoline.
The same for the case, or you could use water and detergent and soak it for a few days. Make sure the needle bearing is removed from the left side of the case, don`t reuse it.
