Default Older harley stock pipe questions...

Hey guys, any opinions on the older harley stock touring headers? I have the ones with the right side crossover pipe. No cat, No O2's either. Im considering upgrading the motor with new cams Andrews 54, 97" big bore, and street porting my heads. I like the sound of my slipons and the torque is pretty solid. I have another bike with true duals and that bike lost some bottom end with the duals, so Im really not interested in that route again.

Just curious as to any opinions on the stock headers. Thanks.

The stock heap pipes are known to crack right at the 'Y' coming out of the rear cylinder. If considering a change you can use the S&S headers that will run the rear cylinder pipe under the bike like the new touring bike headers. This will make better power than true duals, move a lot of the heat away from right under the seat and not be prone to cracking like the stock head pipes...

Thanks. Good to know. Do those pipes work for a 2001 though? I was reading some where about clearance issues under the swing arm for certain pipes. I Definetely want the best tq/hp I can get for the swap out. thanks again.

If you run them, separate the front head pipe from the rear head pipe and use a steel bit on a die grinder to remove the part of the rear pipe that protrudes (usually about 25%) down into the horizontal section. You would be amazed how much of the horizontal pipe is blocked.

The S&S power tunes seem to look really nice. Found some for $418 shipped. Is there a big advantage over the stock y pipe (non cat/ non O2)?? I have read about guys claiming 8-11 hp and 3-5 tq gains, but most of them had stock pipes with cats. I'm just curious if the gains are noticable or even possible over the NON CAT pipes.

Anyone have any input?
