Default Pipes backfire

I know I have read this somewhere, I did a search and no luck. When I decel hard or get off the throttle I get a lot of popping and occasionally some big backfires thru the pipes. The carb was rejetted, new pipes and air cleaner. The bike pulls and has plenty of power, stage 1 is a great upgrade. How worried should I be about the backfire and popping? Do I need to go in with the carb adjustment or out?

@dynamac

that is so funny. as you may have seen from my posts i have a 99 fat boy, carburated and installed the forcewinder air filter and had the carb jetted to both. i have that same annoying backfire on acceleration and deceleration. i was told if on acceleration could be wrong plugs...on deceleration it is normal as the aircleaner is taking in air. who knows it is time for me to enjoy riding and less worrying. if i wind my bike out in 2nd gear then let the gas go...it pops and backfires like crazy...i dont know i was told by one dude riding behind me it sounded cool..so what the hell...good luck

My guess would be it has an air intake leak, or you are running lean. Check for a leak first as it is easier to do than replacing a jet.

Bill

It isn't an air leak. I went thru that ordeal when I rejetted the carb. I think I might be running a little lean. Just have to adjust the carb. I am already running a 48 idle jet and a 195 high jet. When the choke (enrichner) is out I can't get it to backfire. I think I need to go out on the carb adjustment about 1/4 to a 1/2 turn. I'll adjust it and see what happens on the way to work.
fatty47, somewhere in the forum are tips on checking for an air intake leak. I am not positive but one of the ways was to spray carb cleaner around the seal and see if the rpm's increased. I knew mine was screwed up when after rejetting the carb, I started it and it ran up to over 3500 rpm and when I adjusted it I wouldn't stay. One run is lean and backfiring thru the carb and the next thru the pipes with only a 1/4 turn.

Just curious. What kind of gas mileage do you get with a 48 pilot and 95 main jet??? Are there any other modifications other than a Stage 1???

I get between 35 to 40 on gas mileage. More on the highway the better mpg. The stage 1 is all I've done so far. I was going to change the ignition coil but the parts guy at the dealer said not to waste my money. He's a pretty straight forward guy. Went a 1/4 turn out on the carb and it's a little better. Think I'll make a 1/8 turn tonight and see how it goes.
