Default Difference between SE 103 and well done 95

I have a good friend with a 03' RK Classic. He had the dealership install a SE103 kit two winters ago. I rode it and liked it aside from the poping on deceleration. I can't comment on the cams or heads other than to say it is all HD SE. There is no SERT or PC III so no dyno tuning either. I'm just wondering how this bikes torque and hp would compare with a well done and tuned mild 95 or 98 build on my 99' Ultra. I will be installing a tuner not sure which and either andrews 37 or S&S 570's. The heads will have mild porting and cleanup.

A well tuned and tweaked 95 or 98 will eat a stock 103. Hell, a well tuned or tweaked 88 will eat a stock 95. If you put them up against each other stone stock the bigger build will win. The problem is that all the engines come out of the factory so lean that you have to do something to make them run and breath. Your friend is losing a lot by not having a SERT on his 103. A decent air cleaner, some nice pipes and a SERT would make all the difference in the world. Add some head work to any of the motors mentioned above with some good cams and you will really make it scream.

I would only waste $1500 on a Screamin Eagle crank if I ran out of bore. Stroking does nothing good for an engine and is the last option IMO for adding displacement. If I ever needed to go larger than a bolt in 95" or 97"(Not 98" as everybody thinks)setup, I would spend that $1500 get the case bored out and buy a 107" or 114" kit.

This guy put in the Screamin Eagle 103 kit with SE intake, SE pipes and SE download because that is what the guy that sold him the bike recommended. Heard this story before?
The bike runs good and has alot more power than it did when he bought it and since he has nothing to compare it to he thinks he's doing pretty good.I guess I'm wondering how my winter build will stack up against his. Time will tell I guess.

Wally,

I'm not clear if you're going with the 570 set-up or the 37s, but IMHO with the right components and tune, either of those set ups would give a factory 103 a thrashing. More importantly, you'll be wearing a big grin all the time!

Wally who is doing the mild port work and cleanup? There are alot of backyard "porters" kickin around, make sure you deal with a place that truely understands the relations ship and setup of the heads, cams and compression.

An S&S 570g cam will require stouter springpacks set up for .600 lift. The 37g can reuse your stock springs. Personally if you want a real strong torquey cam with great midrange the S&S570g or Woods TW5-HG are killer cams if you go the extra mile with your heads.

I haven't decided on who will do the head work, but, it will be someone reputable. Got any suggestions in the east or north east?
