Gettin' the most from my '02 - 88
May have touched on this previously... pardon any "repeats".
I'd love any ideas on how to get the most from my '02 - 88 carbed Fatboy engine w/o changing stock dimensions or a major cash investment... for right now. I intend to install some V&H Big radius 2-1's, a DynaJet Kit, and AN Big sucker stage 1 air cleaner.
Any specific suggestions as to cam upgrades (brand & grind), changing head gaskets, head porting (who?) etc. are greatly appreciated. Looking to stay stock for awhile, my motor only has 3,000 miles currently. I'll probably up the cubes in the future, so I'd like to keep costs reasonable for now. Thanks in advance for any input. If you go with the 2 into 1 , air cleaner , and jetting , you might find that you've gotten it running quite nicely.
A properly tuned stage 1 setup will wake up the engine , cool it down a pinch , and be a real joy to ride.
You could ride it this way for another year and then decide if you really need more from it.
When you go further than this , the money really starts to flow from your wallet.....

I agree that if you do a Stage 1 A/C, pipes and rejet you'll probably notice a big "butt dyno" difference and would be happy with that for awhile. Then you can choose to up to a 95 or higher and/or a cam change. Remember that parts should compliment each other so if you just opt for a cam change now and then want to go 95 later, the cam you chose for the 88 might not be best for the 95. This is where homework really comes into play.

And remember, power is addictive. I went with just cams at first. Got a good boost (was able to stay with a stage 1 96), but after 6 months, I wanted more. I ended up going the full 95 and replaced the cams I put in.

I think if your going to do it you've got togo all the way.
95"
cams
headwork
1set of lifters
adjustable push rods
gasket kit
Should get you close to 100/100
Can be done for around $2000-2500 forparts and tack on $1000.00 for install and dyno.
Cheaper if you do the work yourself, it is suprisingly easy to tear down and reassemble the top end on these bikes. Once you do a little your going to want more. You won't believe the difference once you ride a hog with a built motor.

i have a 02 fatboy w/carb. i stayed at 88" to save money and to see what it would do. i put in cams, ported the heads( stayed stock valve size),and decked the heads to raise compression. its not a radical engine, but it woke it up and i am happy. it keeps up to most 95" bike i have rode with no problem.

The question I ask is, whatdoes "most" mean? 95"@ 120 hp? Certainly can be done.Or 100/110 without the cost?
A the 110/110 mark, cool running, smooth operation, and great fuel economy also.
