Default Red Engine Light Stays On- Ignition Module

Hey Guys,

I just installed a Screamin eagle 6200 ignition module (for minor engine mod) and matched coil on my 2002 Softail and now the red engine light comes on and stays on when the motor is running. The motor runs great with no missing. Does this trouble code mean a problem or just needs to be reset? Thanks if you have any ideas on what to do.

I think you will find it is a simple reset- The ECM probably threw a code when the module was changed....Clear the code, and you should be good!

Default RE: Red Engine Light Stays On- Ignition Module

Hello Bruce,

Thanks for your quick reply. I scrolled through the codes using the odometer button ( while turning on the ignition at the same time). The reading sequence came up as the folowing: d01clr, d02clr, d03clr, d04clr, d05clr, d06clr, d07clr, d08clr, d09clr, d10clr, then PPU, then #82883, then back to d01clr etc...
I tried to clear any codes by holding down the odometer button for 5 secs. but the red engine light on the 2002 Softail still remains on even though the motor runs great. I agree there should be a simple reset but I don't know how to do it. If you do know how please let me know.

Thanks for your help,

Carter

IF anyone knows the list of codes and what they mean for a 2002 Softail please post. On this forum there is a list for a 2004 RK and how to clear them but they are not the same for a 2002 Softail.

Default RE: Red Engine Light Stays On- Ignition Module

Im chasing the same type of thing, but on a 99 fxdwg... spent 125 in diagnostics at the local dealer to no avail.... in the mean time I've found this - but I don't see your code..

[i]Be advised this only applies to the full serial data bikes, ie 04 and 05's

The IM (instrument module) is capable of displaying DTC's (diagnostic trouble codes).

Speedometer Self Diagnostics: The speedometer is capable of displaying and clearing speedometer, tachometer, TSM/TSSM and ICM/ECM Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC).

1- Turn Ignition switch to OFF & Run/Stop switch is to Run.

2- Push odometer reset button in & hold.

3- Turn ignition switch to Ignition and release odometer reset button. Background lighting sould illuminate, speedometer needle should sweep its full range
and indicator lamps (battery, security, low fuel, check engine and cruise) should illuminate. The word “diag” should then appear.

4 - Push the odometer reset button once and you will see the selection menu "PSSPt" with the first P flashing.

5 - Each letter represents an area of the diagnostics module. The module that is flashing is the one you are going to check. To move from one letter (module)
to the next, you push the odometer reset button one time. (from P to S to SP to t and back to P, etc.)

P = ECM/ICM (Electronic Control Module (EFI) / (Ignition Control Module, 'Carbureted')
S = TSM/TSSM (Turn Signal/ Turn Signal Security Module)
SP = speedometer
T = tachometer

6 - To get the DTC within an area of diagnostics, push and hold the odometer reset button in for 5 seconds and release. If there are any DTC’s the code will be
displayed or the word “none” will appear if there are no DTC’s. Push the odometer reset button again to view additional codes if they exist.

7 - Record the codes.

8 - If DTC’s are not to be cleared, Press and release the odometer reset button. Part number of module will be displayed.
NOTE: To determine if a code is current or historic, clear the displayed code by pushing in and holding the odometer reset button ( longer than 5 seconds) until 'clear' comes up.
Release the odometer reset button. Turn OFF the ignition switch. Run your bike and shut it down then recheck the DTC’s again by repeating steps 1 to 9.
If the code is current it will reappear.

9 – Press and release the odometer reset button to continue to the next module.

10 – Turn Ignition switch to OFF.

Carter, What did you find out on this? I did exactly the same and I have the exact same problem with a 2001 FXDX. The check engine light is on but it runs great. It happened right after installing the 6200 module and coil. I went through the codes and mine were all clear. Dealership wanted to sell me a diagnostic that would probably show nothing... I would like to clear the CEL but nobody has addressed this correctly to my knowledge anywhere on the internet. If anyone out there knows how to fix this and has been here and isn't taking a "probable guess" please let me know. Please.
Thanks,
Pete

the carbed bikes dont have an ECM like the FI bikes. the ignition control unit that you installed handles that function. what unit did you install? brand? new or used?
ive had some in the past that did not play well with the rest of the bike, post up what unit you used then we can go from there.

sorry just reread what part number unit did you use?

Hi, I installed a 31710-99 Screamin' Eagle kit. I bought it on eBay however so if there was a prior problem they seldom tell you. 07/06/00 date on the kit. I also did the mod on the stock CV carb per Brian Thomas on YouTube. Vance and Hines Short shots with Thunder Torque inserts no baffles. It runs great I just feel very uneasy riding with a constant CEL.. I thought about putting everything back (as far as the SE kit) and see if that helped. Also my bike is a California version but all that is gone before I got the motorcycle. Thank you for responding so quickly I appreciate it.Oh, one more thing, I suspect it may have been used but in the original box.
Pete.

Is that the part number on the module itself?

Holy thread resurrection Batman!!! Even 15 years and some change it's still not a record breaker...had there been no posts in 2006 it would have smashed the previous record. Puts this one around 4th place and there's no prizes for not finishing on the podium. Welcome to forum to the new guy.
