Default Woods TW-408-44 Cams

Anyone using these cams yet on their 96 or 103, 107 builds ?.

Keen to hear how they compare to the likes of the Woods 6, Andrews 54, S&S 510.

They're not new, but newer. Almost identicle to the 400's, lift is the same, but the intake closes a little later on the 408's. Closes at 44 as opposed to 42 with the 400's, and the duration is longer at 248 as opposed to 244. Very little difference. I ran the 400's in my 95" for a while, really liked the power band with incredible torque hittin down low! On the down side the ramps are very aggressive and made alot of noise, so I ended up going with the cams I've got now (t-man 590's). Pretty much the same power while not pushing it with the high lift.

they look great to me...I predict they'll be as good for 103" as the wood 6 is for 95"

I have the woods 7H. Almost the same intake duration (40) lower lift, 0.575, I think. Wonderful cam.
Setup with springs for the 400 and I guess the newer 408 also.

Per Donnie Petterson in AIM Mag, I adjuster the Fueling lifters 4.5 turns down instead of 3.0. No noise anymore. Targets 0.05 for lifter adjustment instead of 0.10.Made a wonderful difference.

The 408-44 cams are new for the 07 and up motors. They have a 248 degree duration and a 530 lift, and are rated to work with stock springs - a bolt-in cam.

I'd expect they'd be like the Wood 6, except the torque curve would be centered higher... a little less bottom end, a little more top, and a little bigger peak. I'd ask Bob Wood what he thinks would be best for your riding style, he's more than happy to help customers.

This is an extract of an email I sent to Bob Woods and his reply:

I am after a cam that will do a bit of everything I suppose. (if there is such a thing). I really love to ride the bike hard for relatively short distances at times (bar hopping I think is the term you guys use) and at other times I need the bike to behave for highway riding. I definately am not the type that just cruises around. I have no care for fuel consumption savings.

Bob's answer was as follows:

You are in luck. Go to our web & check out the new TW408-44 bolt in Knight Prowler cam for your bike. Chain drive & no head work.
Call Bob Wood 205-525-4949 for more details.
Thanks
Bob Wood

The 6, 6H, 7H, 400, 408, and 44 Magnum are all ground from same centerline.

One thing I must add that I never see brought up much in the discssion of wood cams is their excellent low speed manners and driveablility, even when compression is not pushed to the max.

News Flash!
Have a client coming in from eastern Upstate N.Y., to build an 2009 next week.
107" drop on, D&D Fatcat, our in-house Stage II Heads and the "44 Magnum" cam.
Really looking forward to this!( I'll bet our client is too!)
I'll be sure to alert you folks to the outcome.
