depends on how radical you build it Dalton and phil ride their bikes all over the country. i tear mine down well my builder does it for me every yrjust to check and over 10,000 miles and over 350 dyno runs not a problem. this year tho i have had not as much chance to ride as i wish i could of.

As already mentioned, the skirts are not really that short, and the OE cases are absolutely fine.
We build a good amount of 117", as well as 124", as both share 4 1/8" bores.
As long as they are maintained, they are quite a good engine.
Have them towing trailers, and also no problem with cross-country trips, loaded down.
Scott

I agree with Dalton, Goerge, Kirby, & Scott...

Build it "right", get (and keep) it properly tuned and take good care of it and it'll take good care of you.

Dunno about you... but I build these *****'s to RIDE!

16+k miles on my 117. Just tore it down for a cam swap and comp bump. All looked great in there. CCP and leakdown were the same as when i built it. Service regularly and ride with no worried. Phil touched a good point on the tune. Built it, tune it, ride it. in that order.

Did a 124" engine, stock cases, S&S cylinder kit and crank, R&R Stage 5 heads. The guy called me from Amorillo Texas in July with 75,000 miles on it, broke a valve spring and commented on how good (clean) the piston tops/combustion chamber looked. Rode East to coast then back home to Southern Cal. Put in a set of +.010" pistons at 85,000 miles and rode to Bonniville and set two land speed records.
