Default Extremely High Oil Temperature in CT

We finally got some riding weather here in the northeast so yesterday I took the bike out after work. It was about 70F. 20 minutes later and almost to my first stop I see that my oil temperature is about 260 and rising! I saw it even drift up toward the max 350 mark but come down slowly back to 260. Coming home last night at about 60F outside the oil temperature did the same thing.

I have about 1600 miles on my oil. The bike has about 72K miles. I did timing chains and tensioners at 53K miles. There is no smoke. No loss of power. No oil consumption. At idle the bike did not drop down below 1000 rpm. I haven’t pulled the plugs or checked the air filter yet.

The only thing I notice is a lifter or pushrod tick at low rpm's while cruising in town when bike is warmed up.

Max temp I've ever had was 230 in the dead of summer.

Could my oil temp sensor be bad? How do you check the oil temp sensor?

I don't know but that is what I would suspect.

One way would be to pull the probe and place it in a pan of boiling water. The gauge should read about 212°F.

If your oil temp was that hot you would be able to smell it as well as feel the heat when you stopped.

Just got back from another fun ride today. Still running hot. Stopped to fill up with gas. Took a look at the gage and now its back to 180. YEAH!!!! I'm wondering if I accidentially put 87 instead of 93??? That or just a bad tank of gas.
