Default 1978 ironhead 1000cc Sportster.

Hi,

Just entering a world of HD with a fully refurbed 78 Ironhead sportster (refurbed in 2008).

Okay, I fallin in love with a beautiful looking and sounding bike Ill attach a video.

Before I exchange cash......what are the main points with this engine that I should be looking for as in.....is it a dog!

I know that pre 80's HD motors were not the best built but for some reason this one...maybe has been looked after.

Can anyone tell me what is in store mechanically if I buy her, does anyone have a good one......is it a money pit???

All constructive answers would be appreciated.

I had a '77 sporty. I literally tinkered with it all week just to ride it on Sunday. I wont even start on the whole "marking its territory" thing. It was quick as hell & fun to ride. At the time I couldn't wait to sell it ( I did ), but wish I had it back. If the one you are looking at is rebuilt by someone who knows what they are doing & the price is right, I'd buy it. That thing is awesome, dude! Just be warned, they are more maintenance intensive

If the engine/trans/electrical is in good working order, and has been maintained, and not abused, you should be able to enjoy it, for some time.
Top ends were notorious for rebuilds at about 35,000 or way sooner, depending on how they were used.

Nothing fits a 78 sporty but 78 parts. That really narrows the field for replacements.
