Default Sportster - gas in air filter

I Have a '99' 883 sportster which I have added a stage I with screaming eagle pipes, air filter and regetted CV carb. My problem is gas in the filter element. My son rode the bike yesterday and said it was extremly sluggish, was backfiring thru the carb. and had hesitation when the throttle was cracked at slow speeds.

I took the element out and was literally able to wring gas out of it.

Any suggestions PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!

Ray

Did the problems start right after the mods you describe? If so, firt thing to check is the most recent work done. When you re-jetted the carb, did the float level get changed accidentally? When re-assembling, is something missalligned so float is sticking open? If gasoline is running out of the carb, the problem is normally related to float level, float damage, needle valve damaged or worn.

Thanks for the help. I can't definitively say it started after the mod's since we did the work within a few days of purchasing the bike. We have rejetted the carb several different times and this does not seem to help. the float issue is something we have not looked at. Is there a simple way to check this? And how do you determine the float level?

This link should help. Good luck. If you don't have it already, you need to get the service manual too because the detailed steps for most repairs are too complex to post in a message like this. Let us know how it turns out.
