Pan/Shovel cases

Pan/Shovel cases. How is this working?
After 7 years of blissful riding my motor finally gave up the ghost so, time for a rebuild. Here is what I am trying to figure out; The right case is a 52 according to the stamping but I cannot figure out the left case and how they are working together. The left case is obviously shovel but it is nothing like 66-69. It is running an alt/stator with 80 inch pistons and heads. I didn't think the cases in this conifiguration would bolt up. I cannot find any part number stamps on the left side but I havn't split the cases yet. My biggest dilemma is what parts to order as far as pinion shaft bearings and possibly pinion shaft (if I find out it needs to be replaced). This really has me baffled. How is this working?

As I understood, it was not uncommon to convert generator motors to alternator (deemed more reliable) by swapping out the left side case ... apparently (as illustrated by the OP's experience) these combinations were workable ...
What was the question ...?
edit: oh ... pinion shaft bearings and pinion shaft ... sorry I can't help you with specifics ... I'd say research the number from the '52 and then see if you can find out if/when it changed ... in my experience, sometimes the only way to tell if a part really works is to buy it and try it ... bearing shouldn't be too costly ... shaft a little more so, possibly ...

The question is how is this working but maybe more specific, I didn't think an early Pan case would bolt up to a later Shovel case. I could see it if it was pre 70 but this one is obviously post 70. I just have never seen it before.
Has anyone ever ran or rebuilt this configuration before? If so, are there any known complications I need to watch out for?

In our yeeeeeeeeears of day to day engine building here, we've heard of it, but have never seen one.
